With more than two decades of experience in the industry, Mike Collins praises trade show, eMerge Americas, for taking key steps to achieve continued growth.
Recently, I had the chance to floor-manage at eMerge Americas at the Miami Beach Convention Center. This event, like many others, is increasing the number and the quality of engagement activities around what was once a typical trade show. eMerge Americas has been able to engage a young, tech-savvy audience and offer them multiple ways to experience — not simply attend — the show.
Hot New Concepts Attract Participants
Diane Vidoni, Chief Operating Officer of eMerge Americas, has recognized that the key to success is ensuring that attendees remain engaged throughout the entire event. There were a variety of opportunities for participants to interact with the showcase of products and services.
This year’s hack-a-thon had the largest number of participants. The theme was #MiamiResilience and participants had 24-hours to build technology that supports, solves or celebrates the resilience of Miami. Check out the winners here.
Many established companies with large exhibits got in on the action too. One creative exhibitor, Comcast, built an elevator in the booth where companies were invited to get in and make their “elevator pitch”.
Start-up companies were broken into three stages of development: early, late, and university. Companies made a pitch on the spotlight stage where, as an observer, it was easy to identify to whom the hot new concepts belonged. The hotter the concept, the larger the audience of potential investors that gathered to see the pitch. These were savvy individuals who attended the event hoping to score an opportunity to jump on board something new and exciting.
For those of you who are fans, Pitbull has delivered a keynote address at eMerge Americas each year since its inception in 2014.
The coding competition is organized by Pitbull, eMerge Americas, and Zeppelin. I can’t wait to see what they come up with!
The Future is Bright
After experiencing SXSW a couple of years ago, I believe that eMerge Americas is on the cusp of establishing an equally great tech/lifestyle event in Miami, with an emphasis on being a tech portal to Latin America. The Greater Miami Convention and Visitors’ Bureau, Miami Beach Convention Center, and established Miami tech sector are doing a great job of planting the seeds for eMerge Americas to be the next big “thing”.
While it has been around for five years, eMerge Americas is still a start-up show but is getting its legs underneath it with a strengthening identity. I noticed a tremendous improvement from last year with a larger number of attendees and a higher quality experience. I expect eMerge Americas to experience exponential growth in 2019. With the completion of the renovation at the convention center, the timing could not be more perfect for the show to expand.
